West Bottoms
I haven’t had much to share this week: it has been surprisingly busy, and I’m trying to unplug (at least a lot, but maybe not completely) from the internet and focus on getting some important things done over the next two weeks.  I figure I need to at least show up with some form of contribution to the blog this week, so here are a couple of photos from 2008, taken in the West Bottoms...

Freelance Projects You Shouldn't Take
When the pitch goes something like this: “This project should be pretty simple, we just don’t have time to take care of it ourselves right now.”

Lewis Nerman Museum
A contemporary Art museum on the Johnson County Community College campus (what a mouthful) that is often over shadowed by the Nelson Atkins. It is really a fantastic addition. Well designed, clean and modern.  Last week I finally got around to taking some exterior shots of the building. Something I’ve been meaning to do since it opened. On the underside of the overhang (which you can see...

“It’s just wrong to base your life or your business so it is dependent on...”
– If you’re a freelancer, you know them: the emails about a project that start with an apology, the phone calls that regret the short timeline or the slim budget. Everyone knows that it’s wrong, even the person wanting to hire you. But, it is the reality at hand. We don’t always have a choice....

Money: Best Places to Live 2010 →
This years list, and once again Overland Park makes the top 10, ranking in at #7. Four KC suburbs make the cut in the top 50, including Shawnee (where I live) at #17.

Two more things......
A couple of the best feelings which have resulted in losing my job: 1. Being told how easily I could be replaced. Yet 3 months later they are still looking for a replacement. Ha 2. Seeing them place ads for 1 full time Industrial Designer, 1 part time Graphic Designer, and 1 contract Photographer to fill my shoes. :D Probably one of the nicest compliments I have received.

Being fired for all the right reasons....
I have never spoken of my abrupt and sudden unemployment back in March; the event was tossed to the side as if it didn’t happen. Mostly because I was not upset with the fact that I lost my job. Really the only thing that even bothered me about the situation was the owner of the company I was working for at the time, got away with being a horrible person. Let’s rewind all the way back...

Groundhog Run
Was wondering if anyone in KC has done the Groundhog Run in January before, which takes place in the man made caves? Is it worth it? It is kind of expensive but how cool would it be to run in caves?

girlwhocriedmilk asked: I have a degree in graphic design and took one marketing class in college but have never studied the two subjects in relation to one another. I will soon be working closely within the marketing division of a nonprofit and feel I need know more than just how to properly layout a newsletter. Do you have any books you recommend on the topic?

Studio News: Exciting developments
Things have been busy over here, working on many things. Lots of new work going on in terms of prints and illustrations. Some of which include a set of 4 silkscreened wood prints I am developing, and maybe they will be wrapped up in a month or so if I push it. The most exciting thing happening though, is the possibility of landing two new online retailers! I’m currently working things out...

Organization Products
The last products I designed before leaving the worst job of my life (so far), are now finally coming to market. I’m not posting photos, because what they consider to be a good photo is completely embarrassing. However, I am pretty proud of the products, considering the budget we worked with. Plus, I’m really happy with the fact I was actually able to sneak in some style, to a company...

Aerial Photos
A long while ago I mentioned taking photos of the beautiful landscapes during my flight from Miami to Chicago. I sort of forgot about them, but here they finally are. I spent a lot of time on Google maps actually trying to identify some of the locations, which was pretty difficult.  Ok, so the first one is a little fib. This is actually flying into Miami. But I didn’t want to leave it...

Quick Update....
So, this was a bust. So it is back to the drawing board for me. It was WAY too expensive to laser cut.  Time to restructure it, and figure out a way to make it much less expensive. Which I think I might be able to do, but is going to involve basically redesigning the whole thing from scratch. And since I am still working on it, I’m going to keep you in the dark still. :)

Sharing is great!
I wanted to share something I have been working diligently on, and give you a sneak peek at what I hope will be as awesome in reality as it is in my crazy mind. I’m not really going to explain what it is just yet though, since I am still at an early phase.  I have been working on a product. I’ll leave it at that :) I’m getting really, really close to sending it off to have it...
