This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Panton Chair. A chair that is regarded as one of the most iconic designs even today. Verner Panton began working on the design around 1960, and the first commercial production was not until 1967. Except the extremely complex shape proved to be difficult to make. Vitra and Panton went through several different materials, from fiberglass, to polyurethane and eventually injection moulded Luran. Thus becoming the first chair to ever be made from a single mould. Unfortunately, Luran could not take repeated stress, and they eventually had to pull the chair from manufacturing. The chair was then produced in fiberglass again during the 80s. Today the chair is made from injection moulded polypropylene.
One bit of information that I did not know: Verner studied under Arne Jacobsen for 2 years.
